Mid-Twentieth Century Headrest in Animal-Like Form

About the Item

This large mid-twentieth century headrest, carved from a single piece of wood, comes from the Dinka culture in South Sudan. With multiple upright supports, the headrest displays a wonderful animal-like form. Attached to the headrest is a plaited leather strap, which originally served as the handle. As a result of use, the headrest exhibits a smooth patinated surface, particularly around the curved neck support area. Estimated Period: Mid-20th Century (Or Before) Length of Headrest: 42cm

A whimsical and intriguing headrest carved from a single piece of hardwood in the form of an anteater. The curved back of the animal would have supported the neck and displays a wonderfully warm patina from tribal use. The anteater's over sized head has been carved in a charming manner. Found in Sumatra, but most likely traded from Irian Jaya.
