Shaman Drum with Carved Wooden Handle, Nepal Himalaya, Mid-20th Century

Shaman drum with carved wooden handle. Nepal Himalaya, mid-20th century. Offered by Bruce Hughes. Typical of the drums used by shamans in the Himalayan regions of central and east Nepal, this two sided drum has an extended handle akin to the traditions of Tibet, and differs from the one sided drums used by shamans of west Nepal which, like those of central Asia, are gripped from the back, reflecting perhaps separate ancient origins. The beautifully patinated handle has the overall form of a Tibetan phurba, or three sided ritual dagger, and is decorated with snakes, a trident, and the faces of deities. It is a perfect example of the blending of many cultural and esoteric traditions -- shamanic, tantric, shaivite and Tibetan -- that has gone on for centuries in the Himalayas. Though difficult to assign to a specific ethnic group, this drum most likely comes from the Gurung or Tamang in the areas to the north and west of the Kathmandu valley. Dimensions: 22 inches long by 10.5 inches wide by 6.5 inches deep.
