About the Item

19th Century Gas and Electric Brass and Crystal Chandelier. Brass six light fixture with colonial crystal spears and cylindrical glass shades that reflect the points of the colonial crystals. Six arms, three of which have the original gas cocks and three of which have always been wired for electric. The entire piece has been converted to electricity, with the gas elements removed or adapted for the least invasive and most attractive way to meet modern electrical standards. Each socket is wired for 60 Watt standard base socket. The piece is finished in a polished brass and protected to prevent tarnishing. There is some light pitting on the brass of the central piece, a nod to the true age of this piece, but nothing that it is visible when hung. The chandelier shows a neoclassical style popular in the late 19th century, with fine acanthus leaf castings on the canopy, and all along the central stem. These cast elements alternate with smooth turned brass. The arms are topped with curved tendrils, and curve up to hold the sockets. The shade holders are a solid cast brass, holding the glass shades upwards, and are hung with rings of crystals. The glass shades are in very good condition for their age, with very light fleabites and no noticeable markings or cracks. Below the ring of arms, a slender stem points down, almost like the handle of a torch, with acanthus cast details, and a round bottom finial.

Rewired: Rewired US 120V hardwired. New sockets, standard edison base, 60 Watt max. per socket. Gas cocks have been drilled out for wiring and immobilized. Gas burners removed for proper electric conversion. Finish is a polished brass with lacquer to prevent tarnishing. Finish is in good condition with very light wear.
