About the Item
Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) painted many Dutch interiors in addition to his famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. In the painting ""The Art of Painting"" a beautiful golden chandelier is displayed above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers permitted artists to demonstrate their expertise at rendering shimmering and refractive brass under changing light conditions. A true testament to their craft and artistry.
The aesthetic brilliance of Dutch lighting design from the 19th century is best exemplified by this imposing two-tier Vermeer 119 chandelier. Each of the two 82cm broad stages is illuminated by eighteen beautifully curving arms that were exquisitely crafted from hollow brass. Each circular tier's frame is embellished with intricate tendrils of scrolling metalwork that join at a pendant that has been sculptured in the centre. This showpiece, which towers 80 cm high, is electrically wired in for the present day. The polished brass glows softly, evoking memories of Holland's bygone Golden Age, when opulent pendants adorned aristocratic manors all over Europe.
Original historical moulds from the era are utilised to create the brass components. Additionally, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels’ soil. After the crown has been varnished, skilled artisans assemble the components. Electric crowns have bent hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being put together, the electrical wiring and lighting components are covertly inserted.

Chandeliers by Brink and van Keulen can be found in a number of prestigious churches and monumental buildings in the Netherlands and other parts of the world. Through the transmission of knowledge through many generations, Brink & van Keulen has substantially aided in the preservation of the Dutch yellow casting craft. The business is the sole manufacturer of chandeliers using original casting moulds from the 17th century in all of Europe.
