60s 70s Teak Ceiling Lamp Pendant Light Uno & Östen Kristiansson Luxus
About the Item
This Scandinavian pendant light, "The Drop," was designed by Uno Kristiansson and produced for Luxus in Sweden in 1955. The lamp body is made of light green, mint green opal glass. The fixture is in very good condition, fully functional, and comes with a new LED bulb.
The designer brothers, Uno & Östen Kristiansson, are known for their lighting fixtures and mirrors and were particularly active in Sweden from 1950 to 1970. They were prolific designers with a clear, easily recognizable "Scandinavian Modern" aesthetic. While there is limited biographical information available about the duo, their works are highly valued by vintage enthusiasts and are sought after in today's vintage market.
Uno Kristiansson was born in 1925, and Östen, two years later in 1927. Little is known about their formal training, but it is assumed that they spent their formative years in southern Sweden. It is likely that their father, who ran his own furniture company (Vittsjö Furniture, established in 1919, named after the Swedish village where it was located), taught them the trade. In 1950, Uno Kristiansson founded his own factory, Luxus, also located in Vittsjö. There, he produced indoor and outdoor lamps, furniture, and mirrors designed by the two brothers. Their collections were introduced in Sweden and across Europe in the 1950s. In 1968, Luxus unveiled a collection of lamps with brightly colored lampshades that perfectly captured the spirit of the 1960s.
It is said that these were designed by the renowned Finnish textile artist Marjatta Metsovaara (1927-2014).
