'Acona Biconbi' Sculptural Chandeliers by Bruno Munari 1969, Published Reference
About the Item
Beautiful pair of 'Acona Biconbi' sculptural chandeliers by iconic Italian polymath Bruno Munari (1904-1998). This model is published in the September-December 1969 issue of the rare Italian trade lighting magazine 'FORMALUCE' on page 35.
Bruno Munari was one of the most important Italian figures in Italian art and designer of the 20th century, he was a true polymath working with equal proficiency as artist, sculptor, industrial designer, graphic designer, film, writer and poet. Munari contributed fundamentals to many fields of visual arts in modernism, futurism, and concrete art, and in non-visual arts (literature, poetry) with his research on games, didactic method, movement, tactile learning, kinaesthetic learning, and creativity.
These stunning chandeliers form part of Munari's essential series of 'Acona Biconbi' sculptures, which were a series of variations based on the same basic sculptural form and formed part of Munari's series of important experiments in what became known as 'arte programmata' ie programmed art during the 1960s.
The complex form of the chandeliers is made up of a series of identical chrome-plated steel sculptural elements which are riveted together to form a complex whole, this external reflective steel sculptural skin in turn envelopes an internal white enameled steel sphere into which are inserted seven chromed head reflector light bulbs which both illuminate and create a complex interplay of light, shadow and sculptural form.
An example of Munari's 'Acona Biconbi' series of sculptures can be seen in iconic French decorator, Francois Catroux's, own stunning Parisian apartment interior which was published in the February 1970 edition of CASA VOGUE, please see Image 9. Catroux was decorator to Pierre Berge, Yves Saint Laurent, Mila Schön, Guy de Rothschild etc.
This design is also documented in Christies '20th century interiors'; auction in September 2008. Please see image 10.

Bruno Munari
In his prolific career, Bruno Munari was known for various contributions to art, industrial design, film, architecture, art theory, and technology. Munari’s principles and beliefs were built upon his early involvement in the Futurist movement, which he joined at the age of 19 using the pseudonym “Bum.” During the 1930s, Munari began to move towards Constructivism, particularly with his kinetic sculptures, Useless Machines (begun 1933), meant to transform or complicate their surrounding environments. Throughout his career, Munari was captivated by both a sense of whimsy and the manipulation of artificial light. After World War II, Munari also developed radical innovation in graphics, typography, and book publishing, through the latter creating pieces he would call Useless Books.
