Antique Swedish Gustavian "Haga" Crystal Gilt Chandelier

About the Item
King Gustav III of Sweden, crowned in 1772, had a passion for architecture and culture, inspired by his travels to Italy and France. A cultivated man with a 2,000-book library, he introduced the Neoclassical style to Sweden, where it is still called Gustavian style. The Haga Pavilion was Gustav III's beloved folly retreat built in 1787 in a woodland park on Brunnsviken Bay near Stockholm. It is a splendid example of late Gustavian architecture, and it was furnished in Pompeian style.
It was all the rage in the early 19th century to possess an object similar to what the King had selected for himself, thus, the Haga chandelier was quite popular at end of the 18th century and was revived again in the late 19th century. We believe this particular chandelier to be from the late 19th century revival period. It was electrified in the early 20th century, but has since been rewired and has five bulb sockets and five candelabra for real candles.
The height of the chandelier itself measures 30 1/2 inches. A new aged brass canopy and chain of 36 inches in length is included.
