About the Item

Art deco ceiling light circa 1935. Pressed molded glass signed Holophane n° 2511. Hammered iron frame. 2 lights, E14 socket. In perfect condition. Height: 13.5 cm Width: 29 cm Length: 29 cm Weight: 5 Kg The history of the HOLOPHANE company began in Paris in 1893. The French engineer André Blondel, with the help of the Greek engineer Spiridion Psaroudaki, invented “prismatic molded glass”. This process uses the principle of light diffraction. By cutting the glass into prisms skillfully distributed over its surface, the light beams can be oriented in a desired direction. On September 30, 1893, André Blondel filed the patent for his invention, which he named “HOLOPHANE”. Unable to exploit it, he decided to sell his rights. After having created its first activities in France, the HOLOPHANE company was organized as follows in the early 1920s: Holophane Glass Company Incorporation, with its own production means, marketing its products in the United States. Holophane Limited, with a very extensive sales territory excluding only the United States, without its own production means. Holophane Limited Company, whose head office is located on Boulevard Haussmann in Paris, which manages the production activity for the English company via its factory in Les Andelys. The French entity obtained the right from the English company to sell its products directly in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland and Belgium. Between 1920 and 1950, SA Holophane specialized in three main areas of activity: Art and decorative glassware, through the manufacture of molds and decorative glass pieces, such as vases, glass sculptures and architectural glassware. The manufacture of glass optical blocks such as lenses for automobile headlights, for spotlights and street lighting lanterns. The manufacture of fixtures and lanterns dedicated to public lighting.
