About the Item

French Art Nouveau bronze and Muller Frères Lunéville polychrome glass four-light chandelier, circa 1920. This impressive French Art Nouveau period chandelier features a mottled “Pâte de Verre” central, beautifully colored glass bowl and three glass lampshades in yellow, white, violet, and purple tones, signed by Muller Frères Lunéville, hung at three chains. Adorable bronze fixtures in the shape of roses with leaves and a matching canopy, decorated with roses motifs. The bronze fixture is marked with the maker's mark "LL" and numbered. Please contact us for more images. This splendid French pendant chandelier features one interior and three exterior lights each with a socket for the B22 light bulb. Dimensions: height: 56 cm / 22.04 in; diameter: 57 cm / 22.44 in. In good condition with slight signs of aging and use. The light fixture is in complete working order, but as with all vintage or antique lighting, we would always suggest it is installed by a qualified electrician. The beautiful multicolored glass bowl was made in the “Pâte de Verre” technique, used in the production of multicolored glass: a cold-formed paste of glass powder and dyes is filled in a refractory mold and then fired in a muffle furnace, wherein the glass melts into the desired shape. To achieve polychrome color effects, the process is repeated with other colors. The production of Pâte de Verre is a slow process that requires a lot of manual skill to avoid bubbles, cloudiness, and cracks in the cooling process. The technique allows for accurate shapes and accurate color gradations in the workpiece, unlike any other glass processing technique. The technique was already known in ancient Rome and Egypt. Especially in the Art Nouveau period, and later in the Art Deco era, she found artistic use again in works by French glass artists such as Gabriel Argy-Rousseau, Henry Cros, Albert Dammouse, François Décorchemont, Amalric Walter, Émile Gallé and George Despret. The Crystal Daum, a French manufacturer of commercial glassware, produced numerous works from Pâte de Verre.
