About the Item

This edition by Josiah McElheny is influenced by several movements and people like Art Deco and Josef Hoffman, but the conceptual underpinnings will likely elude the casual observer. Entitled "The center Is Everywhere," it is based on the cosmos and bursts with information. At its most essential, it is an elongated map of a specific patch of sky. Each of the crystals and lighting elements denote a stellar corollary: the isolated crystals near the top act as single stars, the globular crystal clusters signify galaxies, and the longest rods capped with light bulbs represent distant quasars. In partnership with renowned cosmologist David Weinberg, McElheny used as his basis a metal plate that was perforated with holes corresponding to each visible light seen through the lens of an extremely powerful telescope Weinberg was using to map the sky. McElheny remade the plate in brass and attributed the crystals, lights and brass rods to each of the elements noted by the perforations. The result is this extraordinary light sculpture.
