Chandelier “O. Lelièvre Sclp”, “Susse Fres Edts” Gilded Bronze

About the Item

Chandelier with six lights in gilded bronze, it presents a central baluster that ends with a cone, and it is decorated with leaf-like motifs and laurel branches; it is decorated with a bunch of grapes in the lower part. Six branches embellished with leaf-like spirals depart from the central structure, bearing the same amount of lights. The gilded bronze supports are embellished to emulate a love knot in the upper part, which ribbons go down as draping to support the chandelier. Signed "O. Lelièvre sculptor", "Susse fondeur éditeur, Paris" under the branches. Historical and stylistic analysis: The chandelier belongs to the production based on drawings by Octave Georges Lelièvre and cast by the foundry of the Susse brothers in Paris. The Susse foundry started the business in 1839, under the direction of the brothers Nicholas and Victor, but it was particularly prosperous during the Napoleon III era, when, under the direction of the successor Albert Susse, it began strict and often exclusive collaborations with important artists who signed the licensed pieces. Octave Levrière was a sculptor, the favourite pupil of Théodore Eugène Victor Barrau and his prolific collaboration with one of the most important Parisian foundries is documented by many bronze items, marked with his signature and the Susse brothers’. A pair of candleholders recently gone through the antiques market (Sotheby's, New York, October 15, 2015, lot. n. 101) is very close to our chandelier, of Napoleon III taste, there are precise references on the resolution of the central baluster, particularly in the cone on top and in the bunch of grapes that decorates the lower part, but even the leaf-like spirals that constitute the candle-holding branches have some points in common.
