Drop Shaped Cocoon Pendant Light, Mid Century Modern, 1960s

About the Item

This beautiful drop shaped cream cocoon pendant light is in excellent condition and was made by Goldkant, Germany some time in the 1960s. Well proportioned and giving a beautiful diffused warm light. The beautiful pearl/silk patina is an indication the the lamp was in a NON SMOKING Environment. We think it would fit well with any Mid-Century Modern, modernist or indeed minimalist interior setting. Nota Bene: There are no tears or holes. Not uncommon for these cocoon lamps the frame is slightly rusty on some points but barely visible (please refer to photos for details). Dimensions: Diameter: 34 cm (13.4 in) Height: 34 cm (13.4 in) Often attributed and very close to the designs of Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. In fact this cocoon was manufactured in Germany by Goldkant Leuchten in the late 50's and early 60s . Designer Fritz Wauer was credited by FLOS for devising the technology of spraying the self wrapping foam onto metal frames - similar to silk worms constructing their cocoon. This innovation was later brought to the established Italian FLOS Designers like Carlo & Tobia Scarpa, Dino Gavina and of course to Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. This makes these Goldkant models the original predecessor to later cocoon lamps such as the Taraxacum S by FLOS. Please note, while we tested the lamp and know it to be working (as documented in the pictures) we cannot guarantee that this lamp meets the standards and regulations in your country. We recommend that a certified professional is consulted when installing any lamp.
