About the Item

Pair of neo-Gothic stucco sconces with old stone patina. These gargoyles come from an old light fixture and have been mounted as sconces by our cabinetmaker. In the mid-19th century, a major neo-gothic trend swept through Europe. It was reflected in painting (as in this chandelier) and literature. Faced with this ceiling pendant, we can't help but think of Victor Hugo's novel Notre-Dame de Paris, set largely in the famous Paris cathedral. The latter is filled with remarkable gargoyles, not one of which is alike. The lampshades are made of pig's bladder, they have marks of time (please see photos).
