Gravity Well Chandelier
About the Item
A hand blown glass and formed acrylic chandelier inspired by visualization models of the gravitational effects by celestial bodies in space.
Hand-blown glass spheres gently sink into a frosted acrylic disc elegantly deforming the plane proportional to their mass. This is an abstract representation of a Gravitational Well - an analogy that helps conceptualize the way Einstined imagined gravity, not so much as a force but more of a warping of space time around objects.
Richard has used this concept as the basis and inspiration for his latest piece, aptly named the Gravity Well Chandelier. Known for his celestial themed lighting pieces such as The Cloud and Aurora this new design expands into the realm of making the invisible visible by abstracting and sculpting scientific theories and concepts into installations and lighting fixtures for both residential and commercial projects.
Each sphere is handblown in New Zealand from borosilicate glass - a glass that is more resistant to thermal shock than common glass and so is often used in the glassware of science laboratories. The standard version of the Gravity Well Chandelier comes with 1 clear sphere and two frosted spheres but can also be custom ordered with all clear, all frosted, or even colored glass.
