Historic bronze lantern from a monastery. Naples 1800 circa

About the Item

Ancient bronze lantern from a monastery of cloistered nuns located on the Amalfi coast. A candle was strung on the top, illuminating the chapel for a month. With the closure of the convent by the Jacobins, the lantern was transferred to an aristocratic palace located in the historic center of Naples namely Palazzo Pignatelli di Monteleone purchased between 1823 and 1832 by the French banker René Hilaire Degas, grandfather of the famous painter Edgar Degas, who took refuge in Naples in 1793 following the turmoil of the French Revolution.
