Holger Johansson Pair of Large Chandeliers in Brass and Glass, 1960s

About the Item

Pair of large chandeliers, designed by Holger Johansson. Produced by Westal in the 1960s. Made from brass, smoked glass shades. These impressive chandeliers measure 233 cm (7.64 ft) in height. Each features a two-tier geometric design, the upper tier with 10 brass arms and the lower with 5 arms, holding a total of 15 smoked glass shades. Each shade measures 14 cm (5.51 in) in diameter. Both chandeliers feature a beveled brass ceiling cup. Holger Johansson (1920–1997) was a renowned Swedish lighting designer. In 1952, he founded his own lighting company, Holger Johansson AB, in Stockholm. Influenced by the Scandinavian design movement of the mid-20th century, Johansson embraced principles of simplicity, functionality, and the use of natural materials. His work is widely celebrated for its minimalist aesthetic, featuring geometric forms and utilizing materials such as metal and glass. His works were used to decorate the ceilings of the Filadelfiakyrkan in Malmö, constructed in 1935 and designed by Swedish architects Carl-Axel Stoltz (1904–1975) and Birger Linderoth (1891–1971). Today, Johansson's designs are highly esteemed and often showcased in exhibitions and publications dedicated to modern design. Please note that these chandeliers are also sold individually.
