Hugo Gorge Viennese Modernism Curved Brass Wave Chandelier, Austria, 1940s

About the Item

This exquisite 29“ diameter brass chandelier exemplifies the elegance of Viennese Modernism from the 1940s, designed by the architect Hugo Gorge in the 1930s. Crafted with remarkable quality, its sculptural form features a gracefully curved brass frame suspended by woven strings, accommodating five light sources with conical lampshades. The chandelier looks also beautiful when used without the lampshades. In very good condition with fully functional original wiring, while the brass hardware displays a unique patina which has only grown more beautiful over time. Accompanied by refurbished off-white beige silk lampshades in the original measurements. Upon request we offer complimentary rewiring of the chandelier to meet the standards of your country, as well as the flexibility to adjust the drop height, currently at 38 inches, to your desired preference. Hugo Gorge (1883 - 1934) was part of a circle of architects and designers alongside Josef Frank and Oskar Strnad. Gorge's educational journey began at the lower secondary school in Troppau, where he studied from 1893 to 1897, followed by the State Industrial School in Brno until 1901. Between 1906 and 1908, he audited courses at the Vienna University of Technology, and pursued studies under Friedrich Ohmann at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1907 to 1910. Joining Ohmann's studio as a collaborator in 1909, Gorge later served as an assistant to Oskar Strnad at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts from 1911 to 1912. He obtained authorization as a civil architect in 1933. Gorge's portfolio included designing interiors and constructing numerous residential and commercial buildings in Vienna. In 1932, he contributed to the Werkbundsiedlung in Vienna with a double residential house. His design ethos favored simple ornamentation, positioning him as an early advocate of modernism in Vienna alongside Adolf Loos and Josef Frank.
