About the Item
This pair of large giltwood six-light chandeliers have been carved in the style of Louis XIV. Louis XIV is characterized by rich ornamentation: symmetrical arrangements, often utilizing acanthus leaves, garlands, and scrolls of short length, all of which are present in these chandeliers.
Each of the six richly carved arms is adorned with scrolls, acanthus leaves, and a caulicoli capital that terminate in two rings of rolled molding. Above all the capitals are long, white candle sleeves. The arms merge with the bulbous column in thick volute scrolls.
Beneath the volute scrolls, the column tapers downwards in a sinuous manner. This lower section is embellished with an undulating molding, another caulicoli, and fluted scrolls, before finishing in a roundel. The thick section above the volute scrolls has similar ornamentation, with the noted addition of a series of floral garlands that wrap around the middle of the chandelier column.
The grand pair of giltwood six-light chandeliers have been wired for use in American houses. They can be placed together in a long room such as a hallway or dining room, or they can be installed in separate rooms.
