About the Item
A large and stunning gilt iron and cut rock crystal chandelier in the Louis XVI style, in the manner of Baguès. The chandelier is constructed with a central gilt iron cage issuing twelve candle-form light arms in two tiers. Each arm extends in scrolling acanthus designs and terminates in a gilt foliate candle cup, fitted with white candle-form lights. The frame is dressed throughout with rock crystal prisms and drops, with additional decoration provided by rosettes carved in rock crystal and mounted with gilt centers. At the base, the chandelier is finished with a large spherical rock crystal pendant.
The gilt iron frame is elaborated with foliate mounts, floral motifs, and curling branches that provide numerous suspension points for the cut rock crystal elements. The crystals appear in varied forms, including faceted pendalogues, pear-shaped drops, lozenges, and octagonal links, which are arranged in tiers and swags across the structure. Rock crystal flowerheads, interspersed between the arms and branches, add further ornament, while beaded crystal chains connect the arms and hang in graduated arcs.
Executed in the style of the French firm Baguès, this chandelier reflects the workshop’s celebrated Louis XVI revival lighting designs. Chandeliers of this type are characterized by the use of natural rock crystal alongside gilded iron frames, often incorporating floral motifs and finely chased scrollwork. This example follows that tradition in both form and material, uniting the elaborate gilt structure with substantial hand-cut rock crystal ornament.
