About the Item

A spectacular and large French Baguès-style rock crystal and gilt multi-light lantern chandelier. The chandelier is structured around a central gilt bronze frame, rising from a baluster stem and expanding outward into a square-form cage with scrolling supports at each corner. Suspended throughout the framework are numerous rock crystal prisms, including faceted drops, pear-shaped pendants, and rosettes, each attached with small mounts and arranged to provide a consistent coverage across the structure. The frame is further adorned with gilt bronze floral sprays and rock crystal flowers, the leaves rendered in gilt metal and the blossoms cut from crystal, mounted to project outward in multiple directions. The chandelier supports eight candle-form lights, each elegantly set into gilt bronze nozzles with circular drip pans fashioned from rock crystal. The lights are evenly spaced along the lower square perimeter of the lantern frame, balanced by the arrangement of rock crystal drops suspended below. At the center, a bouquet of crystal flowers and leaves rises upward, contributing further ornamentation. Above this, gilt arms curve outward and upward, supporting additional hanging prisms and floral rosettes. The composition terminates at the top in a gilt corona with scrolling elements, from which further crystal pendants hang. The design is characteristic of the Maison Baguès tradition, noted for the incorporation of naturalistic floral motifs combined with the use of rock crystal and gilt bronze. Founded in Paris in the mid-19th century, Baguès became closely associated with luxury lighting fixtures, often combining hand-chiseled gilt mounts with hand-cut rock crystal ornaments.
