About the Item

This late nineteenth-century gilt bronze and brass Eastlake-style chandelier has four lights, etched glass shades, and foliate scroll details. The entirety of the chandelier emphasizes neoclassical iconography and stylings. The body is adorned with mythological sea horses and Zephyr faces, while the central column is embellished to look like an ancient Greek vase and the arms have columnar detailing. The Eastlake movement, which spanned approximately from 1870 to 1900, was started by British architect and writer Charles Eastlake and is associated with late Victorian-era aestheticism. Eastlake published his thoughts on design reform. The movement focused on the ethos that furniture in people's homes should be attractive, well-made, and produced by manufacturers who enjoyed their work. Eastlake antique lighting was characterized by simple, rectilinear often flat construction, with no excessive curves. The hardware design is pulled from a variety of past eras, borrowing from different cultures and historical design eras. Eastlake lighting designs are typically impressive chandeliers like this one. This gorgeous neoclassical Eastlake chandelier would make for a striking addition to any space. Dimensions without ceiling cover and chain: H=28 in. W=27 in. D=27 in. 30 lbs.
