Louis XVI Style Gilt and Rock Crystal Chandelier in Style of Baguès

About the Item

A fine Louis XVI style gilt and rock crystal chandelier in the style of Baguès. The chandelier is structured around a circular gilt frame with eight scrolling candle arms, each terminating in crystal bobeches and hung with multiple strands of rock crystal drops. Above, the central cage rises in a tapering form, composed of intertwined gilt bronze branches adorned with leaves and further mounted with numerous rock crystal prisms shaped as teardrops and buds. The cage is filled with additional cascading rock crystal pendants, creating a dense arrangement across the frame. The candle arms are arranged evenly around the perimeter and are fitted with candle-form electric lights. Each drip pan is designed with faceted crystal dishes and hung with drops of varying sizes, including large faceted pear-shaped pendants. The lower section of the chandelier is set with a concentration of additional rock crystal pendants suspended from the cage and frame, terminating in a small gilt finial. The gilt surface of the metal mounts contrasts with the clear rock crystal elements, emphasizing the foliage-inspired form. The chandelier is executed in the style of Maison Baguès, a Parisian firm recognized for its production of gilt and rock crystal lighting in the 19th and 20th centuries. Baguès was known for naturalistic motifs, particularly foliate and floral designs enriched with hand-cut rock crystal prisms and drops.
