About the Item

This unusual chandelier is designed in the Empire style from gilt and patinated bronze in the form of an ancient Roman terracotta or earthenware oil lamp. The patinated bronze bowl of the lamp is open at the top, the top rim mounted with ornately cast gilt bronze. Complementing this gilt bronze rim, the bottom of the bowl is mounted with a gilt bronze pineapple-form finial. The patinated bronze body issues six candleholders, each formed as a lamp spout and decorated with classicising motifs. The body is suspended from three chains, which converge at the ceiling mount. The piece is not simply beautiful, both materially and in terms of its design, but the fact it mimics an oil lamp lends this chandelier a particular charm.
