Impressive antique and top quality hand crafted eleven light chandelier with a fabulous fable creature 'Orge'.
An ogre (in English) is a deformed human-like creature and bad spirit known from ancient fairy tales and fables. They are large and powerful and live in burrows in swamps and forests. This also explains why this stunning masks beard to overflow abundance of leafs. The most well known ogres in recent years have been the Orcs in the Tolkien trilogy movies. There are several theories as to where the word oger first appeared and from which language the word derives, but what we feel is more important is what they (in our view) represent. In an attempt to make sense of things humans have always tried to find words and symbols for good and bad, for light and darkness, for hope and fear etc. We have probably always looked for these opposites outside ourselves and not inside. We believe that in story telling that also is how the oger came into existence and the artist whom created this stunning and meaningful chandelier must have been fascinated by the myth and deeper meaning of these 'creatures'. The details in the and the fantastic facial features of this bad spirited creature with demonic horns reveal that this can only be the work of a master craftsman.
This stunning and highly stylish chandelier originates from the earliest years of twentieth century France and to have found it in this beautiful condition more than made our day. The pure white alabaster bowl has no cracks and it is as firm and strong as the day it was hand carved. Especially with the light shining through it this beautifully polished, white alabaster shade with its striking black and whiter veins is of a beauty that cannot be captured in a photo. Those who have already purchased alabaster fixtures from us, always tell us that these pendants are even more beautiful in real life than in our images. And they are. Combined with the five, perfect condition gilt bronze Orge mask sculptures, the gilt bronze chains and the large gilt bronze canopy (all original) this French antique creates an atmosphere that is second to none and they all add to the grandeur of this work of beauty. This is the ideal chandelier for a large entry hall, a living room, a large kitchen or dining area or even for a hotel lobby.
