About the Item

Pendant lamp Löken, Swedish for “The Onion”, designed by Swedish architect Helge Zimdal for the manufacturer Falkenbergs Belysning in the 1960s. In contrast to the common brass version, this is a rare version made from hand blown glass in a bright orange color. It’s often claimed the glass shades were produced by the Danish glassworks Holmegaard but we have found no evidence supporting this claim. The fixture still has its original metal ceiling canopy. The lighting manufacturer Falkenbergs Belysning was founded in 1931 in the town of Falkenberg on Sweden’s eastern coast. Over the years, the company collaborated with several renowned architects to design its fixtures, developing an aesthetic that was notably bolder than that of many competitors. One such architect was Helge Zimdal, who studied architecture in Stockholm and participated in the renowned 1930 Stockholm Exhibition, showcasing textiles and furniture—some in collaboration with his esteemed colleague Carl-Axel Acking. In 1951, Zimdal was appointed professor of architecture at the Chalmers University of Technology.
