About the Item

Sciolari chandelier large twelve lights in gold gilt and smoked etched glass, circa 1970s, Italian. Thoroughly cleaned respecting the vintage patina; newly rewired, in full working order and ready to install. Light bulbs included. This large sculptural vintage Gaetano Sciolari chandelier is impressive and rare with its pistillo curved arms and textured clear tinted glass shades. From a central column there are two tiers; an upper tier of 8 arms and a lower tier of four arms. The arms of the tiers emerge from a bulbous form on the central column, The top tier protrudes out more than the lower tier. The arms of the top tier are long cylinders leading to a lamp holder each with a brass cover while the lower tier has arms which are only the lamp holders and brass covers. The brass covers lead to an intricate optical sculpture which holds the glass shade. The sculpture form is made up of three vertical rods each finishing in a Pistillo shape with a brass ball. The middle rod is longer than the two side rods to create an interesting staggered appearance. The middle rod curves behind the lamp and attaches at the brass lamp holder cover. The two side rods bend in a circular manner to make a frame for the glass shade. The shade is screwed to these side rods. These two screws are decorative gilt balls and washers. The side rods are suspended from behind to the brass lamp holder cover. The quality circular glass shades are tinted brown. There is an etched oblong shape in the centre on the inside surface which diffuses the light. At the bottom of the chandelier the main column of the frame terminates into a dome and finial. This chandelier takes twelve small screw standard light bulbs E14 up to 40 Watts each. Photographed and presently fitted with clear Pygmy light bulbs of 15 watts which are available from most lighting shops and included in this price. Any other E14 light bulb could be used for a different effect. This piece can be used with a dimmer switch. The gold plated gilt pendant rod is divided in two portions at the middle. It can easily be shortened by unscrewing these two parts. The rod also unscrews from the top of the frame, perfect for packing or to replace with a longer rod or chain if needed. At the top of the rod there is the original gold plated ceiling cup which has a concave shape. This can be adjusted and held in place with a ring and screw. Inside this ceiling cup there is an S hook to hang the chandelier from the ceiling. This chandelier is in very good condition. The glass shades are in very good condition with the exception of a chip on one at the point of attachment as photographed. This however is covered by the screw and frame and therefore not noticeable. The gold plated gilt frame, pendant rod and ceiling cup have patina and some rubbing in line with age. Packing is offered free of charge. For safe transport the pendant rod could be separated. Each shade would be wrapped in card and bubble wrap. The frame would be wrapped in bubble wrap and reinforced with card. These items would be supported inside a box with filler. Additional dimensions: The total length with the full rod is: 106 cm. The height of the frame alone (without the rod) is: 57 cm. The full length of the rod alone unscrewed is 60cm. It divides at the centre in two 30 cm portions. Diameter of the glass shade is: 10 cm. The work of celebrated mid-century Italian lighting designer and entrepreneur Angelo Gaetano Sciolari became widely popular in the United States during the postwar years and strongly influenced lighting makers around the world. The sculptural forms and striking geometric details of his vintage floor lamps, chandeliers and other fixtures fit seamlessly into the mid-century modern and Hollywood Regency interiors of the day.

Sciolari formally studied architecture but also pursued filmmaking for a short period. When his father passed away in 1949, Sciolari took the reins at his family's company, Sciolari Lighting, which had been in business in Rome since 1892. The manufacturer expanded considerably under Gaetano’s leadership. For one, pioneering American lighting company Lightolier, in New York City, began to import the Italian brand’s lighting for the U.S. market, and Lightolier’s star designer, Gerald Thurston, was significantly influenced by Gaetano’s work. In the 1970s, Americans looking to add provocative fixtures created by Gaetano Sciolari to their living rooms could find them in Lightolier catalogs.

Sciolari initially crafted lamps and sconces that bore the hallmarks of traditional Italian design. But during the 1950s, when he would become the in-house designer for legendary Milan lighting manufacturer Stilnovo — one of the leaders of Italian postwar design — he created revolutionary fixtures that endured as his best-known work.

Sciolari drew on a range of influences — enthusiasts see the imprint of Art Deco, brutalism and more in his lighting — and designed futuristic Space Age chandeliers, ceiling lamps and pendants for Stilnovo as well as Stilkronen and S.A. Boulanger that defied the conventions of the time. A dizzying array of materials and finishes characterizes the designer’s work, while geometry is pronounced in each sculptural fixture — there are blown opal glass spheres, polished chrome tubes and brass square bulb holders. These combinations were critical to the development of dazzling lighting that proves eye-catching in any space decades later.
