About the Item

A spectacular antique French Louis XVI style ormolu and crystal chandelier. The chandelier is composed of a tiered arrangement of scrolling gilt bronze arms issuing from a central baluster stem, each terminating in a candleholder fitted with faux candles. Twelve lights are arranged in two tiers, evenly distributed around the body. The structure is suspended with multiple strands of graduated oval-cut crystal prisms, joined by faceted roundels and large teardrop pendants. A prominent spherical drop hangs from the underside as the final terminal, adding weight and balance to the overall composition. The gilt bronze arms are richly cast with figural mounts in the form of winged female busts extending into scrolling supports, each arm further detailed with acanthus ornament. The central frame features finely worked foliage and flowerhead details, with each candle nozzle surrounded by a leafy drip pan. From the canopy, a bell-form corona descends, hung with small suspended gilt bells interspersed with further faceted crystal drops. The top section is finished with radiating acanthus leaves, from which additional strands of cut crystal prisms cascade downward. The chandelier is of French origin, produced in the Louis XVI revival style. Its construction combines gilt bronze casting with precision-cut crystal prisms, a practice characteristic of French chandelier production from the late 18th century and later revivals.
