Swedish Modern Glass Ceiling Lamp by Orrefors, Sweden 1930s

About the Item

Orrefors, is a renowned Swedish glassware company known for its high-quality crystal and glass products. The company was founded in 1898 in the small town of Orrefors, Sweden, and has a long history of glassmaking and craftsmanship. This model is a classic Swedish piece with a cosy, refined look and some truly unique design features. Above all else, the double frosted glass shades stand out with an outer shade housing an inner layer of ribbed glass. The outer layer’s diamond pattern is semi see-through, allowing a glimpse into the masterfully worked inner diffuser. The three light bulbs housed inside the glass diffuser create a beautiful effect when lit, glowing from the inside to establish the homey warm light. To counterbalance the shades, the brass stem and rod have a more understated, streamlined look that allows the design focus to remain on the glass. The shade is “pierced through” by the rod, ending in a decorative finial that also serves as a focal point to the design, accentuating its symmetry. Orrefors company has collaborated with a number of well-known designers, such as Ingegerd Råman and Lena Bergström, to create limited-edition collections and one-of-a-kind pieces, likely including this model. Orrefors' crystal and glassware are highly regarded for their quality and artistic merit, and have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. The company has won numerous awards for its designs and craftsmanship, including the prestigious Red Dot Design Award. The history of Orrefors is the story of how the simplest ingredients – lime, sand, and soda – can become magnificent glass objects. While glass has its limits, Orrefors craftsmen got as close to them as possible. Thanks to this effort, the full effect of this ceiling lamp is that of a real room jewel. Mid-Century Modern Brass and Glass Ceiling Lamp, Europe ca 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
The best thing about hanging ceiling lights - besides their stylish look - is that they are the best option to make interiors appear more spacious. They can be used them to concentrate light, or to just add an accent to the room. This lamp’s design revolves around the clear glass sphere. Glass is the perfect material for light shades as it allows light to pass through it. This means that glass light shades offer almost as much illumination as a bare light bulb. The result is bright and vibrant light, and this is exactly what this model offers. The design’s main point is its effective simpleness, free of any unnecessary detail. The uncluttered look leaves the attention on the materials and on functionality that the form is also in service of. As such, the canopy, the rod, and the shade holder are all quite understated, accentuating the glass shade instead. The pairing of glass and brass is perhaps the most iconic material duo in mid-century modern European lighting...
