Thorvald Bindesbøll, Twelve-Armed Chandelier, "The Sun", circa 1900

About the Item

Thorvald Bindesbøll (1846 Copenhagen, Denmark 1908), twelve-armed 'Sun' chandelier, circa 1900, designed in the Skønvirke (arts + crafts) style, brass, large size. Manufactured by F. W. Doberck and Søns Eftf. v. C. Amundin. H. A/S, Copenhagen, Denmark. In our lamp, Bindesbøll's strong and marked influence on and collaboration with George Jensen, the artist, and the infamous "George Jensen aesthetic" is quite apparent. One can see this with his use of design elements, such as acorns. Bindesbøll most especially contributed to the revival of the independence of Danish art and handicraft. Historically, one would have small, silk shades covering each lightbulb however, as depicted here, we prefer to light this chandelier with Edison bulbs with interesting filaments.
