Winkelman Pentagonal Lamp

About the Item

Workshops for applied arts Winkelman'. In 1915, this workshop for ornamental art produced, among other things, the fencing and decorative ironwork of the Scheepvaarthuis in Amsterdam. After the First World War, the city of Amsterdam quickly expanded and the Winkelman ironworks profited of the many building projects. In close cooperation with modern architects such as Van der Meij, De Klerk and Kramer, Winkelman created fences, gates, fire places, clocks and light fixtures in a signature style with organic ornaments of great finesse. As the work of most of his contemporaries, Winkelman was inspired by nature, Asian art as well as Dutch vernacular styles and a mixture of international Art Deco influences. In the lamp offered here, the ventilations slats on the top of the lantern-shape armature are a functional as well as a decorative element, resembling a double Pagoda roof. The wavy ornaments remind of sea creatures, which is enhanced by the mysterious underwater glow of the mottled opalescent leaded glass shades. The geometrical shapes of the shades resemble crystals and shells, popular motifs amongst Amsterdam School architects and designers, who above all admired the organic designs formed by Mother Nature.
