About the Item

A pair of early 19th century exquisetly executed ormolu five-light candelabrum, attributed to L’Escalier De crystal. The luxury store of the Maison a L'Escalier de crystal was stablished in 1802 by Mme. Désarnaud, it supplied clocks, lamps and other objects d'art to the ruling families of Europe. The business was located in the Palais Royale, a centre of excellence for the high quality jewellers, silversmiths and manufacturers of Objets de Vertu, for which Paris was renowned. The firm specialised in objects of great technical and aesthetic innovation, many composed entirely of crystal and gilt bronze. For the realization of its models, Escalier De crystal most often called upon Parisian artists specializing in a specific technical field. We assume the high quality ormolu bronze figures were commissioned by such an designer/maker which would explain explain the -still unidentified- stamp GD. The individual components were then assembled to the firm's own designs - much in the tradition of the 18th-century marchands-mercier, from whom they inherited their specialist profession. The glassware of L’Escalier De crystal was generally created and manufactured within its own workshops using unrefined crystal mass ("Blanc") from Clichy or Baccarat. The firm exhibited to great acclaim at the 1819 Exposition des produits de l’industrie an outstanding gilt bronze-mounted crystal dressing table (exhibited in the Musee de Louvre), and was appointed fournisseur breveté du Roi that same year. The atelier continued its success throughout the century by collaborating with designers and makers such as Gallé and Christofle, until its demise in 1923. A pair of ormolu bronze five-light candelabrum, each with a classical female figure in flowing drapery holding aloft a classical urn, issuing cornucopiae-form branches with foliate and removable nozzles. The classical figures standing on a stepped pedestal of cut crystal, either Baccara or Clichy crystal, and ormolu bronze, on a square plinth with moulded edges of anthemion.
