About the Item

One of one, this lamp was designed for her client in 1983. Exceptionally high quality and exactly to specification. Her blue-prints are included. On a quality dimmer switch with a custom hand made very large lamp shade. Important to note how few female architect/ designers were working in the field in 1983, Barbara Ruth running her own firm designing interiors with as much enthusiasm as designing the furnishings. Barbara Ruth (b. 1940-2021) Barbara was a graduate of the Stevens School in Philadelphia and Skidmore College (BS), Saratoga Springs, New York, and eventually the Tyler School of Art, Temple University (MA). She studied Fine and Applied Arts, designed sports wear and textiles in New York City, ventured a professional sojourn as a Textile Designer in Paris, France before returning to Philadelphia to work in an architectural firm where she designed interiors, lighting and selected furnishing for their clients. After 11 years gaining experience, she opened her own firm, creating interiors for Bryn Mawr College, countless restaurants, Derby’s Wheel House in Erdenheim, PA, The Restaurant School, PA, Teamsters Local 115, PA, Teamsters Joint Council 53, PA, Swathmore-Rutledge School Library, PA, University of Pennsylvania, PA, Temple University, Moorestown Friends School Library, NJ, Stockton College, NJ, Rutgers University, NJ, Washington College, MD, and many private residential estates. In addition to applying her craft, she was an instructor and lecturer at Temple University, Drexel University, Skidmore College, an exhibitor at the American Institute of Architects, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and a professor at King Mongkut Institute of Technology in Thailand.
