About

Giotto is the name of this limited edition floor lamp, just like the name of a very important figure who has conceived art beyond belief during his lifetime. There are only 9 unique pieces, hand-crafted by the designer himself, who "wanted to transform an important everyday object like a pencil into a refined piece of art and design...". For the realization of the lamp, the research of the materials has been very important: “we are returning to self-sufficiency and self-production.” Each component , in fact, is made from different materials and handmade processes accurately followed in any detail: The cone is made from three blocks of seasoned ash tree wood taken from selected boards over 15/20 years old, glued together and hand turned. The Plexiglas tip has been hollowed out internally, the middle section is frosted whilst the tip is transparent which means that light is captured and then released onto the ceiling. The main body of the lamp is made from upcycled brass tubes, which were once used in Italian industrial plants, finely mirror polished. The base, which represents the rubber of the pencil, is made in copper-plated solid brass and thanks to the weight of the block, it has enough stability to support the lamp and defy the laws of gravity. In-between the two sections there is a black anodized iron ring which serves both as joint and embellishment. The LED light system is dimmable and produce a 3000K warm light.

Giampiero Romano

Giampiero Romanò, born in 1973, is an art designer from Milan, Italy. He didn’t go to design school or an art academy, but he gained the skills by experimenting with nails, hammers and paint in his workshop located in the heart of Porta Venezia in Milan, where he has dedicated himself for more than 20 years towards research and restoration of antiques and design pieces. Thanks to such experience and to his extraordinary creativity and hand skills, he started a fruitful collaboration with Maurizio Cattelan and Pier Paolo Ferrari’s Toiletpapermagazine, where he added his original and recognizable touch to the display of their famous graphics, producing art pieces shown in renowned art galleries worldwide. His production is made by unique pieces and items in limited edition, which design and manufacturing is personally realized or followed by the artist himself like an old school master craftsman. Tradition and innovation melts together in Giampiero Romanò’s artworks, where the heritage of antiques and the art of the past are re-edited with a gaze to the future, to the newness, to the never seen before, in order to upset the common esthetical canons and replace them with something new and original.
