Contemporary earthy Ceramic Nagwag floor lamp by Jan Ernst

About the Item

In response to the OWN brief seeking an interpretation of a 'games room,' Jan Ernst offers a unique perspective drawn from his own upbringing on the African continent. Unlike the conventional notion of a games room confined within city walls, Jan's childhood playground stretched across the untamed landscapes where the earth itself became his canvas for creativity and exploration. For Jan, toys weren't manufactured in factories; they were born from the earth itself. Along the riverbanks and in the treetops, Jan fashioned his own transient game room, constructing mud villages and sculpting figures from wild clay and other organic materials. Adventure awaited at every turn, whether herding cattle or shearing sheep in the traditional kraal enclosures. The kraal, with its circular enclosure designed to safeguard livestock, became a focal point of play and merriment for Jan and his companions. It was here, amidst the rhythms of farm life, that Jan discovered the boundless potential of the natural world as a playground. Drawing from these formative experiences, Jan's ceramic wall mural embodies a sense of fluidity and childlike whimsy. Organic shapes and playful forms dance across the surface, evoking the carefree spirit of youth. Hidden nooks, crannies, and small projections invite viewers to embark on their own journey of discovery, while the textured surface pays homage to the rich tapestry of nature.. Crafted from white stoneware clay and glazed in a high gloss finish, the mural measures 1.6 x 1.7-meter. Light dances off the surface, accentuating the organic shapes and infusing the space with a sense of vitality and joy. Jan Ernst invites viewers to rediscover the magic of childhood adventure, where imagination knows no bounds and every moment is infused with possibility. Jan Ernst is a multidisciplinary creative specializing in functional art and spatial design using clay as his main medium. The work is driven by his fascination with natural structures such as corals, fungi and rock formations. His organic designs stem from his abstract understanding of form and space influenced by his background in architecture, his connection with the natural world and his South African heritage.

Ernst Voss Floor Lamp, Denmark 1930’s
By Voss Belysning
Located in Valby, 84
Rare floor lamp by the Danish manufacturer Voss Belysning, the lamp is manufactured and desigend in the 1930’s, the lamp is a great of how the Danes had their own interpretation of Art Deco and in a way created their on more modernist style of Art Deco. Ernst Voss and Voss Belysning where in their time a very important part of Danish design history and were on level with designers and manufacturers like Louis Poulsen, Poul Henningsen, Lyfa and Fog Mørup, sadly they have over the years been forgotten which is very hard to understand when you see the quality of their designs. Ernst Voss was both an army man and metal worker and in many ways a very important part of the history of the town Fredericia where he lived. Ernst Voss should be known as the epitome of a determined and principled individual with an indomitable drive. This applies to his work as a military man, business owner, city council member, and private person. His contributions to and work for Fredericia can hardly be overstated. Ernst Voss was born on November 17, 1826, in Aalborg and died at the age of 77 on December 8, 1903, after a long and exceptionally eventful life. Ernst Voss came from a distinguished old Pomeranian and Mecklenburg noble family. His father, Gustav Wilhelm Heinrich von Voss, was a major in Aalborg, so the military was not unfamiliar to Ernst Voss when he later chose to follow in his father’s footsteps. In his early years, however, Ernst Voss attended a Latin school and subsequently learned about agriculture. At the age of 19, he took over the farm Jomfrubakken near Mariager. The farm and agriculture became a quickly concluded chapter for Ernst Voss. In the spring of 1848, the First Schleswig War – the Three Years’ War – became a reality, and Voss enlisted at the age of 21. This would mark the beginning of a long, unbroken military career that only ended when he retired from the army at 52 in 1878. During the Three Years’ War, Ernst Voss first demonstrated his exceptional character. He participated in one of the early major battles at Schleswig on Easter morning, April 23, 1848, where he was in close combat with the enemy. He, along with over 200 Danish soldiers...
