About the Item

A rare and beautiful floor lamp by french artist and sculptor collaborative Jean-Pierre Garrault and Henri Delord for Chabrieres, France 1971. During the same year, 1971, Garrault -Delord held a joint exhibition of their sculptures and paintings entitled 'Espace Urbains' at the 'Musee des arts modernes' ie MOMA, Paris ,many in a similar style to their contemporary Guy De Rougemont. Please see Image 10 for documentation. This design was also exhibited at the presitigious 1972 EURODOMUS exhibition in Turin which was curated by Gio Ponti. Please see image 8 Early references to the design of this floor lamp can be seen in Garrault's series of 'Geometrica' paintings and sculptures dated 1968-69 many of which feature a flowing wave form surrounding a central sphere. You can view many of Garrault's works including original images from the 1971 'Espaces Urbain' at MOMA , Paris at the website of 'Jean-Pierre Garrault' , click on 'oeuvres' and the subsections 'Geometrica' and 'espaces urbain' to see period photos of sculptures and paintings from this period. The lamp features a beautiful flowing form chrome plated steel frame which supports a spherical diffuser via 5 small diameter steel pins to create a wonderful, floating in space, lighting effect ,please see image 2 The globe is the original and is made from PMMA Methacrylate, in 1971 a new and very expensive material which now exhibits some yellowing commensurate with age ie UV exposure and use over 43 years. A lovely and rare example of classic french design of the 1970s. Wear consistent with age and use. Excellent vintage condition overall, the spherical PMMA Methacrylate diffuser exhibits some yellowing due to UV exposure, unavoidable and commensurate with 43 years of use . A fine example.
