Longing for the company of trees green fabric light by Batten and Kamp

A pair of mirage-like hanging soft sculptures are made from silk printed with abstract images draped over cast aluminium branches, with hand-crafted neon lights ‘dripping’ beneath the fabric. ‘Longing For The Company of Trees’ expresses a blurry memory of the forest, featuring streaks of light diffused by an ethereal green textile design made by collaging photos taken during a hiking trip on the couples’ last trip to their home country of New Zealand. The counterpart piece ‘Longing for the Space Between Stars’ has an eerie purple glow through a collage of images downloaded from Nasa’s archive including photographs taken during the recent landing of the Perseverance Rover on mars.

The Hong Kong based, New Zealand design duo’s limited edition ‘functional sculptures’ are born of their mixed interests in nature and science fiction and are being launched at a new solo exhibition in December
Batten and Kamp is a creative partnership between interior architect Alexandra Batten and designer or artist Daniel Kamp. The duo creates one of a kind furniture, objects, installations, and interiors with clients and collaborators in Hong Kong, New Zealand and the wider Asia Pacific. Their projects have received accolades around the world, most recently their ‘Shelter to Ground’ collection was published in esteemed cultural publications such as Design Boom and Design Anthology.

The idea was born after deciding to reconnect with my family and my grandfather – a sculptor artist. Learning to sculpt and being a designer compelled me to combine these two mediums and use their best values. Experimenting with the functionality of sculpture and the meaning of furniture led me to create the collection.
Studio AOAO is an interdisciplinary studio combining art and design. It was created by Alicja Strzyzynska and Onur Iseri in Amsterdam in 2020.
“We specialise in making sculptural pieces by experimenting with the functionality of sculpture and the meaning of furniture. In our works, we focus on the emotional connection between the object and the user. All of our work seeks the experience of intimacy and the metaphysical bond between personal interaction and meaningful narrative. Through sculptural value and reflective design, we aim to create pieces that last for generations and help reduce environmental waste.”
The inspiration to sculpt came from Alicja’s roots, her grandfather – an artist sculptor. Alicja completed Masters of Arts Degree in Product and Visual Communication Design at Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts and finished her bachelor degree in Interior Architecture. Alicja previously worked in Tokyo and Amsterdam in architectural design studios. Onur completed his business studies in Japan and worked in digital design & marketing as well as teaching in Tokyo.
