About the Item

A rare and sculptural adjustable floor lamp designed in 1955 by Oscar Torlasco for the esteemed Italian lighting company Lumi. Crafted in patinated brass and black enamel, the lamp features a signature pivoting “eyeball” spotlight fitted with a polished crystal lens that beautifully diffuses the light source. Both functional and elegant, this piece exemplifies the poetic precision of Italian postwar design. The adjustable arm and rotating head allow for directional lighting, making it ideal beside a reading chair, desk, or architectural feature. The large crystal lens softens and disperses the light, a hallmark of Torlasco’s dedication to both visual comfort and design clarity. Oscar Torlasco (1934–2004) was one of Italy’s most inventive lighting designers, known for combining optical engineering with sculptural refinement. In 1959, he was awarded the prestigious Compasso d’Oro for a streetlamp design that demonstrated his technical ingenuity. Much of his work was created for manufacturers such as Lumi, Esperia, and Stilux, and is today regarded as iconic within the canon of mid-century Italian lighting. Lumi, founded in Milan in the mid-20th century, quickly earned a reputation for producing forward-thinking, architecturally inspired lighting. Working with talents like Torlasco and Gio Ponti, Lumi became known for using premium materials—brass, crystal, enamel—and pushing formal boundaries while retaining exceptional functionality. This lamp is a quintessential example of that ethos: minimalist yet bold, refined yet practical, and timeless in both silhouette and spirit.

Austrian Turned Walnut Floor Lamp, circa 1915
Located in Kilmarnock, VA
A substantial and sculptural turned walnut floor lamp, crafted in the Biedermeier style, with a commanding 18-inch diameter base and beautifully executed proportions. The warm, highly figured walnut is expertly lathe-turned into a sweeping architectural form that references 19th-century European classicism while remaining strikingly modern in silhouette. Producing a turned piece of this scale—especially with such balance and clarity—would have required exceptional skill and specialized equipment, particularly during the early to mid-20th century when this lamp was likely produced. The sheer size of the base and the consistency of the turning across its full height suggest a level of craftsmanship often reserved for architectural columns or custom commissions. The result is a floor lamp that feels as much like a piece of sculpture as a functional object. The lamp is designed in the tradition of Biedermeier, the early 19th-century Central European style known for its simplicity, symmetry, and reverence for fine materials. Though pared down in ornament, this style was favored by intellectuals, artists, and aristocrats for its quiet elegance and timeless restraint. Originally sourced from David Duncan Antiques...
