RAAK Floor Lamp with Fiberglass Cocoon Shade

About the Item

RAAK, floor lamp, model ‘D-2004’, coated iron, fiberglass, wire, The Netherlands, 1962 The cocoon globe floor lamp is designed by the Dutch lighting company RAAK Amsterdam, a significant Dutch lighting manufacturer of the 20th century established in 1954 by Carel O. Lockhorn. The advancements in lamp technology have influenced the design of lighting fixtures. The D-2004 lamp was created as a result of the use of breakthrough materials and technologies of the sixties. Designers started experimenting with other types of lighting in the 1960s and early 1970s, including halogen bulbs, fluorescent and neon tubes. During this period, the designer’s material options were also expanded by newly developed plastics, from spray-on ‘Cocoon’ (a self-skinning PVC) to translucent Perspex (methacrylate). Executed in fiberglass, the lampshade radiates a sophisticated and diffused light that will give one's interior a pleasant ambience. The designer kept the frame simple by the use of tubular rods positioned in opposite directions. The model D-2004 is very rare. These type of cocoon lamps were first introduced in 1951 by the renowned Japanese American artist Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) named Akari lamps and set a trend for other designers. Kindly note that the fiberglass shade contains a minor perforation and a small restored area, including some stains. The iron framework contains some scratches. • Rare Angelo Ostuni for O-Luce Floor Lamp with Ocher Yellow Shade
    By Angelo Ostuni, O-Luce
    Located in Waalwijk, NL
Angelo Ostuni for O-Luce, floor lamp, model '312 V2', Carrara marble, brass, coated aluminum, Italy, 1949 This floor lamp is designed by the influential designer in the field of lighting design Angelo Ostuni in 1949 which his brother Giuseppe took into production for their new established lighting design company 'O-Luce'. His first models designed between 1946 and 1948 were made in a more traditional manner to suit the taste of the Milanese upper-middle class. Ostuni's shift in his design approach is clearly displayed in the features of this designed model. Not only is this lamp aesthetically pleasing, it is clearly designed to provide a light source to adjust to one's own requirement. O-Luce manufactured an extremely complicated construction of rollers and springs inside the lamp bar (less than 15mm circumference) which allowed a smooth height adjustment without any cable impingement. Combined with a precision ball joint at the base, this lamp has an almost unlimited rotating telescopic flexibility. In addition, the cone-shaped aluminum shade coated in ocher yellow can be rotated to change the direction of the light partition. In 1950, Angelo Ostuni and his brother received international recognition for their exceptional lighting designs, mostly for the application of adjustable features in their designs which was highly innovative during that period. Angelo Ostuni (1904-1981) was an Italian designer and the elder brother of Giuseppe Ostuni (1907-1994) who established the Italian lighting company O-Luce. Together, they collaborated on numerous of designs for O-Luce that became one of Italy's leading lighting design companies. Angelo Ostuni was born in Trieste, Italy in 1904, when the city was part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Ten years later, the First World War began. In 1915 Italy declared war on the Habsburg Empire and soon the Italian army bombed Trieste in May 1915. The Ostuni family endured some difficult times and eventually moved to Milan in 1919. Angelo enrolled into the Instituto Tecnico of Milan. From a young age, he showed a special talent for drawing. La Fiamma...
