Totem lamp by Bernard Rooke England 1960
Dim with shade : 150 cm height diameter 40 cm without shade 117 cm height and 26 cm diameter
This design is an early example of Rooke's work from the 1960s. A sculptural piece, composed of handcrafted ceramic elements in natural terracotta and stone tones, with a combination of Turquoise glaze on some pieces.The lamp is composed of separate sections positioned on a central metal tube, some elements decorated with Rooke's own hieroglyphic style symbols. The ceramic is in good vintage condition, with minor wear and flaws consistent with the manufacturing and hand-firing process - including cracks, nicks, glaze loss, and minor asymmetry
Bernard Rooke was born in 1938 and studied ceramics at Goldsmiths College in London. In 1960 he established a studio in Forest Hill, which he shared with another potter, Alan Wallwork. Rooke made progressive sculptural works and his early pieces were handmade using coils and blocks. His work can be found in private collections as well as museums and galleries around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
