About the Item

A large, or oversize, ceramic TOTEM table lamp by Bernard Rooke, England. A sculptural piece, made of hand-made ceramic elements in natural tones of terracotta, stone and dark green, with a combination of finishes. The lamp is made up of separate sections, positioned on a central metal tube, separated by nylon spacers. See notes on wiring below. Shade not included. The ceramic is in good vintage condition, with minor wear and flaws in line with the hand-making and firing process - including cracks, nicks, glaze losses and a little asymmetry - see images for detail and overview. Felt pads protect and level the base. We do not see any stamp or signature - this is consistent with early pieces, and we guess this lamp dates from the late 1960s or early 1970s. Wiring: New wiring will be required in the country of install, to meet your local needs and regulations. We recommend the use of low heat bulbs to protect the fixture for the future. Shade: The lampshade is not included. Approximate dimensions: Ceramic only: H 85 cm W 21cm at base D 21cm at base Bernard Rooke was born in 1938, and studied ceramics at Goldsmiths College in London. In 1960 he set up a workshop in Forest Hill sharing with another pottery artist, Alan Wallwork. Rooke made progressive sculptural work and early pieces were hand-fashioned using coils and blocks. His work is found in private collections as well as museums and galleries around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
