About the Item

Vassilakis Takis (Greek 1925-2019) Signal Lamp, Series 2, No. 180, 1968 painted and lacquered aluminium base, two chrome plated steel telescopic supports, square and circular lights with violet and magenta acrylic diffusers. When switched on, the lights flash intermittently in a mesmerising sequence. 205cm high, the base 26cm x 23cm Metal publisher's label to underside for Unlimited, a company aimed at making art more accessible, which was based at Widcombe Manor in Bath from 1967 to 1969. The company, founded by Jeremy Fry, used the manor's basement as its operational hub. Unlimited collaborated with various artists, including Takis, to produce and distribute artworks in multiples. Vassilakis Takis (1925–2019), a Greek artist, was a trailblazer in kinetic and magnetic art. Entirely self-taught, he crafted dynamic sculptures combining movement, light, and sound. His iconic "Signals" and "Musicals" explored invisible forces like magnetism, merging scientific principles with artistic expression in a poetic, experimental style that gained international acclaim.
