19th Century British Ceylonese Handblown Etched ‘Glow Lamp’ Bell Jar Lantern

About the Item

19th century British Ceylonese handblown etched ‘Glow Lamp’ bell jar lantern. These lanterns were handblown in Sri Lanka for the British expats. They were referred to as 'glow lamps' rather than bell jar lanterns there. Originally used with oil and floating wick, they were electrified in the 1990s, when they were imported from Sri Lanka. All brass hardware on the outside is original. Beautiful etched leaves and grapes on bell with original smoke deflectors. All hardware is original except for the central cluster of electrified lights. The pendants are in excellent condition and have their original rolled brass bands and smoke bells. They have been newly electrified, each with a three-bulb candelabra cluster accommodating up to 60 watts per bulb. Three well matched lanterns of this scale available and could be used in a grouping. Bell 12" high x 9" wide, drop from the ceiling 28" high Provenance: Harrington Estate: Importers of Colonial Raj Furniture.
