I'm offering a total of 29 Palatial Lanterns on my 1st Dibs store. ****The Lantern pictured in this listing is LANTERN #14, the oldest lantern of the 29 lanterns I am offering, and my restorer chose it as a single lantern that can be purchased by itself or combined with your choice of other lanterns.**** If you purchase two or more lanterns from Lanterns #1 through #26, International Priority FedEx shipping is FREE. DETAILS for THIS LANTERN (Lantern #14): • color is green • cast aluminum and plexiglass • weighs approximately 46 lbs • has an arm support (not a hanging lantern) and casts its light both outward and toward the wall it will be mounted on • opens from a side pane to access the inside MEASUREMENTS for THIS LANTERN (Lantern #14) Lantern Diameter = 19 inches Lantern Height = 36 inches Arm Width = 25 inches Height including Arm = 53 inches Fifteen (15) lanterns of the total 29 are classified as single (unpaired), but can also be paired or purchased as multiples. Fourteen (14) lanterns are pairs (for seven pairs in total). Every lantern is listed separately because each lantern has its own set of photos, which can be examined individually. (Please see "NOTE" at the end of this description for a breakdown of the general details of the 29 lanterns). Palatial lanterns, like the one in this listing, were first made in the 1880s in France. The lantern design is from model #77 from the Val d’Osne foundry. However, from 1910 to 1940, many of the larger cities in Europe began to electrify in order to lessen the threat of fire and other hazards caused by lanterns using gas. In fact, the last remaining gas lanterns are from 1960. The lanterns were initially fabricated with glass panes, but the glass became too fragile for the cities in France, and years ago the glass was replaced by plexiglass. My master restorer in Monaco has replaced all the original plexiglass panes with new plexiglass so that the color and transparency are consistent. The crown with 5 towers at the top of the lantern symbolizes the old fortifications of Paris. This motif is still found on the coat of arms for the city of Paris. The lanterns were originally gilt at the top, and at some point in their history, the gilt areas were painted over. As my restorer worked on each lantern, he found traces of gilt areas. However, it was not enough to be able to restore. NOTE Of the 29 total lanterns: • all 29 cast their light outward, and 13 lanterns additionally cast light toward the wall • 26 have the same measurements and three (3) are larger (#27, 28, 29) • 13 lanterns are the same size (9 grey color and 4 green color, all with arm support and additionally cast light toward the wall) • 11 lanterns are hanging and 18 have an arm support • This Lantern (#14), the oldest lantern, has a green color, and is the same size as the other single lanterns • 1 lantern (#29) is a larger size with green color, is a hanging lantern, with bronze detail, and opens from the top • Lanterns #27, #28, and #29 are excluded from the FREE Shipping offer Of the 14 paired lanterns (seven pairs in total): • 1 pair (#15, #16) is green color, with arm support • 1 pair (#17, #18) #17 is green color, #18 is dark green, both are hanging • 1 pair (#19, #20) is dark green color, hanging • 1 pair (#21, #22) is dark green color, hanging, open from the top • 1 pair (#23, #24) is light green color, hanging, open from the top • 1 pair (#25, #26) is dark green color with yellow plexiglass panes, hanging, open from the top, with metal suspension rod • 1 pair (#27, #28) is green color, with arm support, with bronze detail, open from the top
