About the Item

A monumental cast bronze and frosted glass porte cochere lantern; (a porte cochere is a roofed structure extending from the entrance of a building over an adjacent driveway and sheltering those getting in or out of vehicles). This example was likely Italian made and would date from the early 20th century. The lantern was allegedly originally hung in an important public building in downtown San Francisco which was sadly torn down; the main body of the lantern is suspended from eight scroll arms featuring beautifully cast lion’s masks; each frosted piece of glass panel is bordered by either rosettes; swags or palmettes. While this cannot be verified, the lantern may have been featured as a prop in a set in the classic Hollywood movie “Gone with the Wind.” Likely Italian, circa 1910. Dimensions: 98? (249 cm) H X 42? (107 cm) W.
