About the Item

Nel XVIII secolo, non essendoci l'elettricità, l'illuminazione era affidata alle candele. Venice, like today, had no roads but waterways, which also allowed people to reach homes. Therefore, when natural light was insufficient, boats often relied on lanterns to reach berths. In the specific case of lanterns such as this one, the function was precisely that of an entrance lamppost: it allowed light to illuminate the outside of the dwelling to reach its front door. The object's uniqueness lies in its rarity due to its structural features, specifically its material. Being made of iron and sheet metal, although painted to limit their deterioration, the lanterns suffered over time from exposure to moisture (inevitable in a seaside town). Venice used to specialize in making these objects but, due to this type of damage, only a few specimens have survived to this day. The iron and sheet metal lantern is colored bottle green and brick red, has six glass faces and is complemented with an arm of the same material and similar colors. Il braccio presenta decorazioni floreali e a foglie d'acanto.
