About the Item

This was originally a gas lantern that reputedly was in the Palace of Westminster until new electrified ones were fitted in the early 1930s. Rather than convert these they were sold off and new ones fitted in their place. This one was purchased there by former owner and then electrified and fitted to the inner courtyard of The Old Post House in Deddington, North Oxfordshire when this large property underwent significant remodelling and modernisation for the time. Time has gone full circle and the new owners of this property are modernising again. I have included pictures from historical archive photos of it in place in the 1930s. This is in beautiful original condition with old painted and patinated copper along with molded lead Tudor roses. All of the glass panes are the original hand blown ones with all the inclusions that come with that, there are 12 panes of the clear glass and 6 of the red cranberry glass. One of the bottom panes forms the door to open which would have been for lighting the gas but now for changing the bulb. There are paint chips and rub marks and wear but are all part of the originality of it. It has the old iron wall mounting bracket attached but wouldn't be difficult for it to be altered to a hanging lantern, to the top and bottom of the lantern there is beautiful fret pierced and molded copper decoration. This of those few items that has a presence all of its own. Much of this lantern is in the style of Augustus Pugin including the hand blown and etched red glass panes but cannot attribute it as such. Possibly made by the Sugg Gas Lighting Company. It is approx 45cm in diameter and total of 85cm high but without the bracket it would be 63cm high.

Wear consistent with age and use. Dents, chips and rubs to the copper with some of the pierced fretwork being bent of dented. Blown glass that does have inclusions. Chips and fading colour to the paint. Wired to show it lit but would need fitting to property by an electrician.
