About the Item

Pair of giltwood antique sconces with two-light branches. These antique wall lamps are richly decorated with acanthus leaves, scrolling foliage and flowers in Rocaille style,  circa 1760 Dimension W: 9.1 in – D: 7.1in – H: 11.4in. Dimension L: 23 cm, P: 18 cm, H: 29 cm. The first part of the reign of Louis XV is marked by the rising importance of a style of decoration that ended in the Rococo or Rocaille style. The term Rocaille originates from the mineral world, indicating small stones, rocks and pieces of glass of irregular form. Just-Aurele Meissonnier (1695-1750) was the first to use the term Rocaille to define patterns that were inspired by irregular or asymmetrically shaped shells. Once they began to be used in interior decorating, shells quickly became quite popular. During this period, the infatuation with shells and minerals was part of the general interest in natural history. Rocaille and shells are the basic elements of this decoration, but one can also note the presence of elements from the vegetal, floral, and mineral world. These are sometimes stylized as seen the leaves and foliage of friezes, or sometimes they are realistic-looking laurel or oak branches. In either case, they reflect the predominance of Nature as a model,.
