19th-C. American Painted Tin Canal Barge Oil Lamp Lantern, S.M. Forte, Troy, NY, USA, Mid-19th Century  A rare 19th-century American Painted Tin Canal Barge Oil Lamp Lantern by S.M. Forte of Troy, NY. This remarkable piece of American nautical history remains untouched and not yet electrified, preserving its original integrity. The lantern measures 12 inches wide, 20 inches high, and 11 inches deep when closed, expanding to 30 inches wide when opened. This rectangular lantern features a wooden-handled domed top, hinged mirrored side panels, and sliding glass sides. The interior includes a glass oil lamp and a glass reflector, providing authentic 19th-century illumination. Painted in a cream color with a vibrant neoclassical trellis design. The maker's name, "S.M. FORTE MAKER WEST TROY N.Y.," is stenciled on the back, adding to its authenticity. An excellent example of mid-19th-century workmanship, this canal barge lantern is both a functional and decorative piece, ideal for collectors and enthusiasts of maritime history. Its rare, intact condition makes it a unique addition to any collection, offering a glimpse into America's nautical past.
