About the Item

Antique 18th Century Dutch Flemish Pair of Triple Wall Sconces Circa 1730–1780 Anglo/Dutch A refined and historically significant pair of 18th-century Anglo/Dutch cast brass wall sconces, exemplifying the elegance and utility of Flemish lighting design during the period. Each sconce features a classic wall plate topped with a decorative ring finial and central baluster-form ball. From this central form, three gracefully scrolled, detachable arms project, each supporting a candle holder with original drip pans—blending both functionality and artistry. These sconces are designed to hold candles and have never been drilled or altered for electricity, remaining in completely original condition. This rare state of preservation enhances their authenticity and collector appeal, offering a true glimpse into 18th-century interior lighting. Flemish lighting, which rose to prominence during the 17th and 18th centuries, was renowned for its elaborate brass craftsmanship and symmetrical, often spherical forms. Originating in the Low Countries (modern-day Belgium and parts of the Netherlands), this style quickly spread throughout Europe and England. Flemish chandeliers and sconces were prized for their durability, ornate scrollwork, and reflective surfaces that amplified candlelight in grand interiors before the advent of gas and electric lighting. Likely produced between 1730 and 1780, these sconces reflect the Anglo/Dutch adaptation of this celebrated style. With their rich golden patina, graceful proportions, and untouched condition, they are not only beautiful period pieces but also an important testament to the lasting appeal and integrity of 18th-century Flemish lighting. Measurement Height: 41 cm / 16.1 inches Width: 40 cm / 15.7 inches Depth: 22 cm / 8.7 inches Weight: 2.1 k.g. / 4.6 Ilbs Condition Report Good antique condition, consistent with age and use. Attractive aged brass finish with natural oxidation and patina, contributing to its antique character. The finish has not been polished or artificially enhanced.
