Antique 18th Century Dutch Flemish Pair of Triple Wall Sconces
Circa 1730–1780 Anglo/Dutch
A refined and historically significant pair of 18th-century Anglo/Dutch cast brass wall sconces, exemplifying the elegance and utility of Flemish lighting design during the period. Each sconce features a classic wall plate topped with a decorative ring finial and central baluster-form ball. From this central form, three gracefully scrolled, detachable arms project, each supporting a candle holder with original drip pans—blending both functionality and artistry.
These sconces are designed to hold candles and have never been drilled or altered for electricity, remaining in completely original condition. This rare state of preservation enhances their authenticity and collector appeal, offering a true glimpse into 18th-century interior lighting.
Flemish lighting, which rose to prominence during the 17th and 18th centuries, was renowned for its elaborate brass craftsmanship and symmetrical, often spherical forms. Originating in the Low Countries (modern-day Belgium and parts of the Netherlands), this style quickly spread throughout Europe and England.
