“While science soothes the mind, art perturbates it” (George Bracque) Black is more than a colour. It is a period. It is an expression. It is a supremacy. It is hegemony. In times of the Renaissance, the so-called Palo de Campeche, a tree of the legume family, arrived in Spain from overseas, the branches made it easier to achieve the black, purple or green dye. Palo de tinte, Haematoxylum campechianum, the black that would become the clearest expression of Spanish fashion. It would be the image of Felipe II and of Spain for a long time, a brand image that would bring together concepts such as austerity, seriousness, rigor or depth. Black versus European color. Black as a symbol of power, not sadness, as a symbol of durability, not poorly understood poverty. This is how the Austrians understood it and this is how the first Bourbon, Felipe V, who dressed in black when he occupied the throne of Spain, understood it. Black are the clothes of Pablillos de Valladolid in the portrait of Velázquez, the painting that Manet praised, indicating that only “it was air that surrounded the little man”. Black would be Coco Chanel's le petite robe noir or Chanel's feminine tuxedo. Black for men and women. Black are some of Sergio Romero Linares...

Serse creates drawings by erasure. He covers a sheet of paper with a dense layer of graphite, then ''draws'' on its surface with an eraser. Using photos as his point of departure, Serse renders mountains, bodies of water and trees from the shades of gray that emerge as he plies his eraser. The resulting image is mounted on aluminum. This image has a powerful presence because of the composition and the clarity of its realism. Serse was born in 1952 in San Polo di Piave. He lives and works in Trieste. The artist has produced over the years an extraordinary series of images that have been included in the book “Drawing”, edited by Phaidon Press. These also owed him the participation in significant national and international exhibitions such as: Parkview Museum in Beijing and Singapore (2018 - 2019); Palazzo del Governatore, Parma, Italy (2018); Centre Pompidou, Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris, France (2013); Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rimini, Italy (2012); Musée des Beaux-Arts et d’archéologie, Besançon, France (2010); Palazzo Reale, Milan, Italy (2007); De Garage Cultuurcentrum, Mechelen, Belgium (2006); III Biennial of Valencia, Spain (2005); S.M.A.K., Gent, Belgium (2004); Rufino Tamayo Museum, Mexico City, Mexico (2002); Center for Contemporary Art Luigi Pecci, Prato, Italy (2002); Kunstverein Augsburg , Augsburg, Germany (2000); Musée de Beaux Arts, Gent, Belgium (1999); Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, Venice, Italy (1997). Amongst the institutions that hosted his most recent solo shows include: Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Saint-Etienne Métropole, Saint-Etienne, France (2014); Galleria Continua, San Gimignano, Italy (2015), Tan Guobin Museum, Changsha, China (2017) and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba (2017 - 2018). This stunning and sculptural pair of Art Deco sconces were realized in the United States circa 1930. They feature silvered bronze pre Columbian inspired bases consisting of a stylized hook detail bookended by curvilinear scroll forms holding a channeled open form ovoid cartouche. The center of the base offers a stylized floral form with striated petals and a raised knob (representing the flower's pistil) that operates the lamping for the sconces. The domed and frosted shades- replete with a wealth of cubist motifs etched in relief) are secured by skysraper style silvered supports with curvilinear scroll detailing at their apex. With their quintessential Art Deco forms (and materials), including Pre Columbian motifs (popularized by Mayan revival...
